The College of Policing guidance states: "Where the subject has previously come to adverse police attention – for example, been arrested, subject of a criminal allegation, or subject of investigation – but these matters have not resulted in a criminal conviction, a case-by-case assessment will be made." The checks - which take the form of both interviews and searches of local and national databases - will examine previous arrests, investigations, cautions, convictions, penalty notices, intelligence reports, motoring offences and open-source material.Ĭonvictions and cautions do not automatically prevent someone joining the police, with age at the time, how long ago it was committed, and the nature of the offence taken into account.Īll cautions, investigations or convictions linked to family members or friends must be declared. Every potential officer goes through a vetting process as part of their application, which includes disclosing information about themselves, their family, and friends.

The Fossils' self-determined destinies are key to the book and it is this that is fudged in the latest adaptation. The oft-quoted line that sums this up is the birthday vow of 'We three Fossils vow to try and put our names in history books because it's our very own and nobody can say it's because of our grandfathers'. These kids are sturdy little individuals working out their own relations with those around them at the same time as dreaming about their futures and what they will be in the world. The three adopted Fossil sisters - Pauline, Petrova, and Posy - are very different with very different talents, and the story revolves around how they grow into and shape the world in which they find themselves. I read Ballet Shoes as a kid in the 1970s and even though I was all flares-and-Multi-Coloured-Swap-Shop to Ballet Shoes' twin-sets-and-high-teas, I loved it. But my real beef is that Heidi Thomas' adaptation got the one thing wrong that for me, as child and adult, is special about the book: the family. I loathed Posy-the-Precocious, a bitching Bonnie Langford, who hardly dances at all - she dances all the time in the book and it's her obsession with dance that makes her so interesting. I have several gripes: Winifred came across as a horrid backstabber, not the talented, earnest but dowdy kid of the book. This was mind-blowing and jaw-dropping all wrapped up in one book. But if you haven't picked it up since your awkward teen years, here's what you may have missed from The House on Mango Street: Since its publication in 1984, The House on Mango Street has become required reading in schools and universities across the country. And when you were reading it the first time around, you probably weren't equipped to recognize a lot of the deeply disturbing events that unfold throughout the book. You may even remember your teacher talking about the novel's use of vignettes, or the short scenes that are used to tell Esperanza's story.īut like so many books you enjoyed as a kid, The House of Mango Street deals with some pretty tough themes under the surface. When most of us picked up the novel, we were still learning about things like metaphor, personification, and imagery in our English classes. Sometimes funny, and often deeply profound, The House on Mango Street is a story about growing up, finding out where you come from, where you belong, and who you want to be. The book is narrated by a Latina teenager, Esperanza Cordero, and tells the story of one year of her life on Mango Street, in a Chicago barrio. At one point or another, we've all read Sandra Cisneros' novella The House on Mango Street. The Frozen Twisted Tale – Conceal, Don’t Feel – had the sisters completely split up as children, and it just felt off. Snow White reads like a very slightly different version of the original film, though the ‘twist’ doesn’t come into play until the very end, meaning a lot of the differences throughout the book don’t actually make sense. Still, the premise itself was intriguing – What if Meg had to become a god? My main issue with Calonita’s previous stories was that they didn’t really change much about the story, or they changed way too much. So I was maybe a little bit apprehensive going into this one. And Hercules ranks as one of my favourite of the Disney films, sparking a love for Greek mythology when I was younger. I have much preferred Elizabeth Lim’s stories, with Liz Braswell being my second favourite. If you’ve read my previous reviews, too, you might have picked up on the fact Jen Calonita is not my favourite when it comes to these stories. This could be something that takes place before the film, during, at the end of… The premise is simple – the authors change one element in beloved Disney stories, creating something new.
